I have to admit that the second attempt does look more appealing, though the first one would be great as part of a trifle or just served up with a bowl of custard.

Funny, I thought about making the trifle, but it would have involved another trip to the store and of course, it wasn't what the birthday boy wanted. I am just going to chalk that one up to experience and and maybe someone in the house will nibble more off of it before it looks any worse.

For some reason, I remember the carmelized sugar as being darker, but then maybe my mother used dark brown sugar in hers. I miss pineapple.
